The Sakura trees blooming is a sure sign of spring in Copenhagen. It is one of our favorite times of year and you can enjoy the Sakura trees or Cherry Blossom trees throughout different parts of the city.

From the Cherry Blossom trees in Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro and Bispebjerg Cemetery in Nordvest, Copenhageners and visitors flock to see the beautiful walkways lined with Sakura trees.

In the city center, the Sakura trees can be best enjoyed at Langelinieparken.

The history of the Sakura tree in Copenhagen is recent and ties back to a significant event in Danish-Japanese relations. in 2005, a donation of 2000 sakura trees commemorated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan.

In 2008, along with the Japanese Embassy in Denmark and the Municipality of Copenhagen, a cultural event was arranged to celebrate the Sakura trees, what we know today as the Copenhagen Sakura Festival.

Langelinie was the location chosen to plant 200 more Sakura trees donated by Mr Takaki, who is the Honorary Consul of Denmark who was also appointed as the ambassador of author H.C. Andersen on the 200th anniversary of H.C. Andersen’s birthday in 2005.

Every year, we enjoy beautiful Sakura trees throughout Copenhagen but more importantly, we get to celebrate a culture quite far way during the Copenhagen Sakura Festival. The festival is taking place today, 20th April through 21st April. Guest can enjoy: Kobudo, Kendama, martial arts performances, calligraphy performances and workshops, a kimono show, manga drawing workshops, origami, mochi and tea ceremony.
